MRC Industries Waterjet cut mosaic tiles to help restore…
Introduction
MRC Industries recently played a pivotal role in restoring one of Melbourne’s historical treasures, the ANZ Gothic bank (Verdon Chambers), a building dating back to the 1880s. Designed by the renowned architect William Wardell, known for his work on St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, the ANZ Gothic bank stands proudly at the corner of Queen Street and Collins Street, Melbourne.
The restoration project, entrusted to MRC Industries by International Conservation Services came about after having another contractor unable to complete the job in the allocated time frame. The project aimed to preserve the building’s original charm by meticulously replicating its intricate porcelain tile patterns. The original tiles, crafted by Minton & Co, an English company, were sent from England and installed around 1887.
MRC Industries’ expertise in waterjet cutting was instrumental in reviving the ANZ Gothic bank’s mosaic tiles. Despite the project’s complexity and time constraints, MRC Industries successfully completed the job ahead of schedule, allowing International Conservation Services to proceed with the installation promptly.
